Darren Marsh – Portrait of Bedford

7 June - 2 August 2008

Local photographer, Darren Marsh was commissioned by BCA in 2007 to develop a body of work that celebrated Bedford’s diverse population. In 2008, the project was bought to fruition through a display of over 400 images featuring people of all ages who live in Bedford. As well as photographing individuals who share his adopted hometown, Darren requested that they answer two questions; where were you born and how long have you lived in Bedford?
Portrait of Bedford received almost 6000 visitors, the highest footfall of any BCA exhibition. People were eager to identify themselves and spot their friends and family on the gallery walls. Visitors were also encouraged to contribute their own photographs of Bedfordians to a separate display within the gallery. Portrait of Bedford encapsulated the sense of community and pride that exists within the town, reiterated through the many comments in the visitor book.

(We learnt recently that following the enormous success of the Portrait of Bedford exhibition, Darren has produced a book showing the entire photographic collection of work. )
