Dominic Allan – Dodgem

25 November - 23 December 2006

Dominic Allan is a talent in the field of filmmaking. His current venture, Dodgem has taken him into the world of the fairground, and explores the hopeless notion of nostalgia.

Dodgem is a film piece that follows the central character, Dominic from Luton, and his obsession with his own meticulously customised dodgem car. He travels from fairground to fairground throughout the south east of England in a Luton van, dressed in a leather costume and helmet. Both his costume and the dodgem display icons from yesteryear. When he arrives at each fairground, he gets into his dodgem and drives it into the arena where he relentlessly smashes his dodgem car into the paths of others.

Through the central character, the film explores the sadness behind nostalgia, the idea that when an individual is living for the past, failure is inevitable. The film gives a sense of Groundhog Day, each act constantly repeated but nothing achieved, as if trapped in time.
