The Gatehouse – Lorrice Douglas

29 November 2008 - 17 January 2009

In the exhibition ‘The Gatehouse’, Lorrice Douglas, former BCA residency artist introduced gallery visitors to a staged space, a façade which mixed fiction and reality. Taking inspiration from the attic room at BCA's former home, the Gatehouse where she undertook her residency, Lorrice chose to create an authentic and scaled replication of her studio whilst filling it with the imagined possessions of the ‘fictional’ Gatehouse Keeper. Visitors could sit in his chair, rummage through his belongings and browse through his books if they so wished.
Unsurprisingly the exhibition was particular popular with theatre and performing arts students. The cosy interior presented within the installation was also a welcoming sight to visitors escaping the cold of the High Street.

“This is one of the most beautiful and well presented installations I have seen in a long time. I really love it. Warm and cosy on a dark winters night.”
“Good to see something like this, especially in Bedford.”
