Urban Pastoral – Justin Coombes

Justin Coombes constructs magical photographs. He contrives scenes at twilight which appear almost dream like. In each image though, there is an edginess too, which hints at something more sinister. His new body of work; 'Urban Pastoral' is a continuation of his long interest in projected images in photography. Using slide-projection and other unconventional lighting techniques, Coombes projects his images onto buildings or interiors at night and then re-photographs the scenes using long exposures. The resulting images capture the clash that occurs when our memory or expectation of a place meets its physical reality. 'Urban Pastoral' opens at BCA Gallery on Saturday 13 October 2007, offering visitors the first opportunity to see Coombes' work outside London.
