Matt Cook
Stereography: stereophonic geography

5 March - 16 April 2005

Matt Cook is a meticulous collector of noise. As a sound and performance artist Matt is fascinated by different rhythmic structures that exist within the urban environment. Whether it is the whirring of a siren, the hissing brakes of a bus or the hustle and bustle of crowds. Matt is enchanted by the constant hubbub and uses it as the starting point for his work.

Whilst working in Bedford as artist in Residence with BCA Gallery, Matt walked around the town to discover what makes it tick. He collected sound recordings, and took photographs that would be used to create Stereography: stereophonic geography, an installation that comprises of a playful and quirky map of Bedford with sound accompaniment.

It is Matt ’s intention that the slightly eccentric and highly visual Bedford map will be as colourful sonically as it is visually. Trees made from pencils spin majestically on cheap cassette players. Toy aircraft are fitted with speakers and plastic people whiz around in circles.

Matt believes sound in installation and performance should be something physical; "I like to be able to see and understand the process". Sections of moving audiotape will climb the gallery wall and occupy the space. The mechanisms used to create the sound and movement will be exposed so you can see the workings of the installation. The combination of all the sound makers working simultaneously will build into a chaotic, ever changing soundscape. A small urban environment emerges filled with sound and images that work together to capture the character of the town.
