Radio 101 – Zoë Irvine

18 September - 6 November 2004

Just 5 miles from Bedford, in the village of Cardington, are two gigantic sheds. It was in these sheds that the first British airships were constructed, including the most luxurious airship of them all the R101.

In 1930, the R101 left the sheds at Cardington to embark on its first international flight. The R101 never reached its destination.

Through Radio 101 visitors were invited to embark on a sonic journey and discover the stories surrounding the R101 through a sound installation created by audio artist Zoë Irvine plus other works by invited guests. Visitors were able to hear about the history, the fate and the legacy of the R101 that still lives on today. Resource material was also available to visitors to enable them to learn more about this local treasure.
