Accession is a collaborative project between Babylon Gallery, Ely, BCA Gallery, Bedford, Norwich Arts Centre and Space 4 in Peterborough that will produce four major commissions by international artists from the new European accession countries. The new bodies of work that result from the commissions will be exhibited at Bedford, Ely, Norwich and Peterborough in 2006.
BCA Gallery identified Poland as its partnership country, and has worked with artist Agnieszka Chojnacka. Territories, the installation that Chojnacka has produced whilst artist in residence with BCA Gallery, explores the way in which one's environment affects how one feels.
Chojnacka has transformed BCA gallery's spaces and created two strongly opposing zones. The first being inspired by the artist’s experience of a Polish hospital. Chojnacka manipulates the visitor’s sense of space, smell and sound to impose an overwhelming sense of uncertainty. The space dominates the visitor, and creates a feeling of powerlessness. The second zone offers a stark contrast and appears fragile, as if the visitor has the power to control and change it.
Accession was originated by Norwich Arts Centre and funded by Arts Council England, East.
